SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND — As the Midwest freezes, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration observing our planet through satellite technology.
The NOAA have released satellite images of the polar vortex as seen from space.
The NOAA is describing the polar vortex as "a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding the Earth's North and South poles."
The article went on to explain that the cold Arctic air from the polar vortex is sent southward toward the U.S when the vortex starts to expand and becomes less stable.
NOAA's satellite captured stunning images of the effects of the polar vortex across the U.S.
Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit along with other cities in the Midwest have been suffering from extremely cold temperatures in the past few days, with temperatures reportedly dropping below -50 degrees in some areas, the Washington Post reports.
