Description :

The lower East Rift Zone of Kilauea volcano erupted in the Leilani Estates subdivision in Hawaii on Thursday, May 3. The eruption prompted evacuations, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Lava came to the surface at the eastern end of the division, according to the US Geological Survey. Lava spatter and gas bursts erupted from the fissure for about two hours, and lava spread for a short distance, less than 10 meters (33 feet), the agency said. Lava was reported to have erupted 125 feet into the air.

Earthquakes had been reported in the vicinity before Thursday’s eruption. The eruption at the fissure had subsided by Thursday evening, but two vents were erupting in the area on Friday, a news report said.
