Federer eases into US Open semis
Roger Federer rarely hit his best form but did enough to beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 7-6 (7-5) and reach the semi-finals of the US Open. The second seed, bidding for a fifth straight Grand Slam success at Flushing Meadows, narrowly edged the opening set before upping his game in the next.
Muller, who had to qualify for the tournament, refused to lie down and took the third into another tie-break. He then led it 4-1 and 5-3 before the world number two hit back ruthlessly.
