In August 1960, two Soviet dogs, Belka and Strelka, made history by becoming the first living creatures to travel to space and return safely. Launched aboard the Soviet spacecraft, they orbited Earth for 25 hours and 17 times before landing successfully. Their survival paved the way for human space travel, inspiring the first human spaceflight less than a year later.
